1. Immersive Learning Environment: A German course offers an immersive environment where you are constantly surrounded by the language. This helps in faster and more effective learning compared to sporadic self-study.

2. Expert Guidance: Learning from qualified instructors who are native speakers can make a significant difference. They not only teach the language but also provide insights into cultural nuances, making your learning experience richer.

3. Structured Curriculum: A well-designed course covers all aspects of the language—speaking, listening, reading, and writing. This holistic approach ensures that you become proficient in every aspect of German.

Where are these courses available?

There are universities and registered language schools in Germany that you can enroll in. If you enroll for a minimum of 6 months, you’ll get a visa that allows you to stay in the country. Yes, you need to have the means to show that you can support yourself and cover these expenses for 6 months, but if you’re looking for a sabbatical and a new country to live in, this is a great way to start.

I’ve personally done this in China, Poland and Germany (yes, I now speak all of those 3 because I first moved there through a language course and then found ways to stay permanently). This is my favorite way to move to a country. It eases you in, it allows you to interact with other foreigners who might be in a similar position to yours (new to the country), and it’s a great way to start immersing yourself in the culture.

The Added Bonus: A Visa that Allows You to Work

One of the most compelling reasons why enrolling in a German course is the best way to learn German is the potential to secure a visa. Many language schools in Germany offer programs that not only help you learn the language but also come with a visa that allows you to work part-time. This is a fantastic opportunity for those looking to immerse themselves fully in German culture while earning a living.

  • Work and Learn: This visa allows you to work up to 19 hours a week while studying, giving you the financial means to support yourself and gain practical experience in a German-speaking environment. You usually study 3-4 hours every day, then you’re free to do whatever you want with your time, including work.
  • Pathway to Further Opportunities: Once you’ve mastered the language and gained work experience, you’ll be in a strong position to pursue further education or full-time employment in Germany. You can read through this article I wrote – 8 ways to move to Germany.
  • Sabbatical or work online: if you work remotely or want to take a sabbatical, this is a great way to do it. I’m currently learning Arabic in Jordan while I work remotely as I write this!

Affordability: Learning German Doesn’t Have to Break the Bank

Many people shy away from enrolling in language courses because they assume it’s expensive. However, the best way to learn German through a structured course doesn’t have to be expensive. In fact, many language schools in Germany offer affordable programs tailored to international students.

  • Budget-Friendly Options: From intensive courses to evening classes, there are plenty of options for all budgets. Berlin is an extremely affordable option, where courses can range from 350 Euros/month and they’re usually part-time. If you enroll in a university or Goethe, the price will definitely be higher.
  • Return on Investment: Consider the long-term benefits—gaining proficiency in German can significantly boost your career prospects. The initial cost of the course can pay off in the form of better job opportunities and higher earning potential.
Open to All Nationalities

The best thing about these courses and opportunities is that they’re not limited to nationality. As long as you can afford it, everybody is welcome.

  • Easy Enrollment: The enrollment process is straightforward and, depending on the school, includes assistance with visa applications, accommodation, and other practical matters, ensuring a smooth transition to life in Germany.
  • Scholarships available: if you’re not from a wealthy country or don’t have a strong passport (non-EU European countries, Latin America, Africa and Asia except GCC countries – I’m looking at you) you might be eligible for a full scholarship to move to Germany. This would cover flights, living expenses, and even insurance. Check out daad.de and filter by your passport country for more information.

What’s the financial investment?

You need to show authorities that you have enough money to cover your expenses to be able to secure your visa. If you’re enrolling in a 6-month course, you need to cover the course in advance, and have the equivalent of at least 6 months of living expenses in your bank account. East Germany, including Berlin, have much lower requirements. Last time I checked this was around 1000 Euros per month. Please remember, I am not an immigration lawyer and this is all knowledge acquired through my years of living in the country.

Conclusion

As someone who’s lived abroad two-thirds of her life, this is an experience I would recommend you do at least ONCE in your lifetime. By enrolling in a German course, not only is this the most effective, beneficial, and practical option, but it also opens up opportunities for work and further study in Germany. The affordability and accessibility of these courses make them an excellent choice for learners of all nationalities.
