Best Time to Visit Nice, France

The best time to visit Nice, France varies depending on what you’re looking for. In this article, I’ll be breaking down the different times of the year when you can visit, and give you different reasons to do so. Here’s a full breakdown.

September and October: The Sweet Spot

If you have any flexibility, aim for late summer/early fall. Temperatures are still comfortably warm, the crazy summer crowds are gone and the prices (while still not cheap) are more manageable than peak summer.

The water temperature is the real argument for this window. The sea reaches its peak in August and stays warm well into autumn, remaining above 20°C through October, which is ideal for comfortable swimming. People visiting during Spring sometimes find the sea too cold even if the air temperatures are still warm.

Nice also sees fewer than 20 rainy days a year on average, so even in early fall you’re likely to get long stretches of sunshine. It genuinely is one of the sunniest cities in France.

July and August: Beautiful but Hot and Crowded

Peak summer is the most popular time to visit Nice. The city gets extremely busy (Nice is the second most visited city in France after Paris) and July and August bring intense heat on top of the crowds.

France has experienced multiple heat waves every summer in recent years, and Nice is not the exception. If you’re visiting in summer, plan around the heat: start your days early, rest during the afternoon, and save beach time for the morning and early evening.

The upside: the sea is at its warmest, the city is at its most vibrant, and everything is in full swing. If summer is your only option, go: just manage your expectations around crowds and book accommodation well in advance. High season prices start from around €200 per night.

May and June: A Strong Alternative

May is genuinely underrated for Nice. Prices are more manageable than during summer, the city is far less crowded, and the weather is warm and sunny. The main trade-off is the sea temperature. Water warms to around 20–23°C in June, which is comfortable for most swimmers, but May can still feel cool in the water.

If swimming isn’t your priority and you’re looking for a quieter, more affordable visit, May is an excellent choice. June gives you the best of both worlds: warmer water, still before the peak rush.

Winter: December to February

Nice in winter is a different experience, but not a bad one. The city gets a jacket-worthy chill (you’ll need layers) but with fewer than 20 rainy days a year, you’ll still see plenty of sun. The crowds are minimal and accommodation prices drop considerably.

December is worth considering specifically for the Christmas market, which is widely regarded as the best in the south of France. If a festive atmosphere and lower prices appeal to you, it’s a perfectly valid time to visit.

January and February are the quietest months overall. The sea is cold – water temperatures average around 13°C in the coldest months, so swimming is off the table, but sightseeing, eating, and wandering Vieux-Nice are just as good. Weather and Climate.

February: Nice Carnival

If you happen to be in Nice in February, the Nice Carnival is one of the largest carnivals in the world, alongside Rio de Janeiro and Venice. It’s a major event that draws tourists from all over the world.

Just book accommodation early: the city fills up quickly during Carnival week despite it being the middle of winter.

My Personal Recommendation

I visited in the summer and had a wonderful time, but if I were planning a trip from scratch I’d go in September or October without hesitation. You get warm weather, swimmable water, far fewer tourists, and a city that feels like it belongs to the people who actually live there rather than the crowds passing through.

If budget is your main concern and you don’t mind cooler water, May is a genuinely good alternative. And if you’re a festival person, February for Carnival is an experience worth planning a whole trip around.

Whatever month you choose, Nice is one of those cities in Europe that should be on your radar.  The day trips alone – to Menton, Villefranche-sur-Mer, and Ventimiglia – are worth visiting.
