Is Dubai Worth Visiting? An Honest Answer From Someone Who Goes Regularly (2026)
Is Dubai worth visiting? Yes, but maybe not for the reasons you think.
I’ll be upfront with you: Dubai is not one of my favorite cities in the world. I’ve visited over 100 countries and lived in 9 of them, and Dubai doesn’t make my personal top list. But I still go regularly. It’s a hub I use regularly for a number of reasons, and I genuinely think it’s a city worth checking out at least once, even if you’re not into luxury shopping or fine dining.
Here’s my honest take after years of coming back.
What Dubai Actually Is
Dubai, whether you want to admit it or not, has gone from a fishing village to being one of the most talked about cities in the world. Less than 20 years ago it wasn’t on most people’s radar.
Curiosity drives travel, and that in itself is enough to check out a new place. I think the best way to determine how you feel about a destination is by actually going there. You can’t speak positively or even negatively about a place you’ve never been to before.
Is Dubai Worth Visiting If You’re Not Into Luxury?
Absolutely, and this is the biggest misconception about the city.
Yes, Dubai has some of the most extravagant hotels, restaurants and shopping experiences in the world. But it also has affordable food in Deira, free public beaches with clearer water than you’d ever expect, a reliable metro system that is very affordable, a food scene that covers every budget (and much cheaper than in cities like NYC, London or San Francisco) and is actually good, and a wide range of activities. Is Dubai Worth Visiting for a Layover?
This is actually one of the best reasons to go, and one of the main reasons I end up there so often. You don’t need to plan a holiday in Dubai. The airport is the third airport (after Istanbul and Paris) that flies to the highest number of countries in the world. And if you’re flying Emirates, chances are you will be connecting here anyway. A 24-48 hour layover in Dubai is genuinely worth arranging deliberately. Check into a budget hotel in Deira, 10-15 minutes from the airport on the metro, very affordable, and perfectly positioned to explore old Dubai. Spend a day in Deira and Downtown, catch the fountain show in the evening, grab a meal somewhere good, and you’ve had a genuine Dubai experience without spending a fortune or committing to a full trip.
Is Dubai Safe?
Incredibly safe. Abu Dhabi (the capital of the UAE) was rated (for the 10th consecutive year) as the safest city in the world and Dubai is not far behind. I travel here alone regularly and have never once felt uncomfortable, including in Deira which some first-time visitors find overwhelming due to its large immigrant worker population. The diversity there is part of what makes it fascinating, not a reason to avoid it.
Crime rates in Dubai are among the lowest in the world. The stories you hear about strict laws are real but largely irrelevant to tourists behaving normally: don’t do drugs, don’t be publicly disrespectful, and you’ll be completely fine.
Is Dubai Worth Visiting in Summer?
Honestly… only if you’re specifically hunting for luxury hotel deals at budget prices. 40C+ temperatures with high humidity and walking outside for more than a few minutes is genuinely brutal. The city is designed for cars and air conditioning in summer and if you’re okay spending most of your time indoors (in malls, hotels, restaurants) summer is when you can access five-star properties at significantly reduced rates.

For most people though, October to March is the right window. March is my personal favorite: the weather is genuinely pleasant, crowds are manageable and prices haven’t peaked.
What Surprised Me Most About Dubai
Two things that most visitors completely miss:
First: the activity scene. Sports, fine dining, events, even an active hiking and outdoor community. There are wadi trips, hiking meetups, and natural landscapes within reach of the city that most tourists never discover. If you think Dubai is just malls and skyscrapers, you haven’t looked hard enough.
Second: the beaches. For a major city of three million people, Dubai’s beaches are very impressive. The water is turquoise and clear, the sand is white, and they’re far less crowded than you’d expect. JBR Beach, Kite Beach and Sunset Beach are all world class and completely free to access.
The Honest Verdict
Dubai is not a city I’d move to. It’s not a city I’d call one of my favorites. But it is a city I keep coming back to: for conferences, for layovers and to visit friends.
If you have the opportunity to visit, even for 48 hours – go. You might love it, you might find it overwhelming, you might have mixed feelings about it. But just like with anything else in the world, you can’t form an opinion about it through others. You have to experience it yourself.
Is Dubai worth visiting? Yes. What you make of it is up to you.
